About The Site's Creator:

Nicole A. Carter spends her time researching, writing, and speaking about the incidences of sexual assault that take place in the African American community. Nicole has a B.A. in Business Administration and a M.A. in English from Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan. She is currently pursuing her second M.A. in Women's and Gender Studies with a graduate certificate in African American Studies. Nicole has always been interested in the stories of Black women of the diaspora as it relates to gender issues, positive forms of sexuality, and overcoming sexual assault especially since she is a SURVIVOR herself. 

In 2009, Nicole Carter  decided to create this site with the assistance of Dr. Paul Leighton, professor and graduate adviser in the Department of Criminology at Eastern Michigan University. Silence Will Not Protect You is an interactive educational tool that will hopefully lead to a greater understanding of the circumstances surrounding sexual assault as it relates to African American women. Nicole realizes that a problem truly exists within the African American community when it comes to silence and it's implications surrounding all forms of rape. The history and present day silence surrounding the sexual victimization of African American women, prevent them from dealing with their rapes psychologically and physically; prevents them from becoming survivors, and perpetuates new instances of sexual assault in the African American community.
